10 Things To Know About Man Who May Succeed Adams Oshiomhole

At the end of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries on Saturday, June 18, 2016, Godwin Obaseki was declared winner.

Godwin Obaseki, who doubles as the chairman of the Edo state economy and strategy team under the Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s administration won the election to become the party’s flagbearer at the forthcoming governorship election proper.

1. Godwin Obaseki was born in Benin City, Edo state to the famous and illustrious Obaseki family.


2. He had his early education at St. Matthews Anglican Primary School, Benin City from where he proceeded to Eghosa Anglican Grammar School, Benin City for his secondary school education. He thereafter attended the University of Ibadan, where he obtained a BA in Classics.

3. He served as the managing director and director of Afrinvest (West Africa) Limited and also served as Chairman of the Board until June 2016.
In 1995, Mr Obaseki founded SecTrust, the predecessor company to Afrinvest, pioneering major innovations and providing leadership in the Nigerian stock market.

4. Obaseki has served on the Presidential Committee on the Reform of the Nigerian Pension System. He also served on the Committee on the Re-activation of the Nigerian Bond Market set up by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). He is an active member of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) and currently serves in its Governing Council. He has also served on many of the committees of NSE.

5. In 2001, he was nominated Global Leader of Tomorrow (GLT) by the World Economic Forum. He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers and an alumnus of the Lagos Business School Chief Executive Program.

6. He is the founding and current chairman of the Edo state Economic and Strategy Team which was inaugurated by Governor Adams Oshiomhole in March 2009.

7. He got a wide endorsement from all the major political stakeholders in APC in Edo state before he contested the primary election which he eventually won by a wide margin.

8. Obaseki holds post graduate degrees in both Finance and International Business.

9. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Stock Brokers of Nigeria

Due to his wealth of experience on the economy, he expressed his strong thought on the nation’s economy in a write up captioned, ‘Why Nigeria’s economy is not growing’ in PM News of Friday, March 25, saying: “How many of what we are wearing here today are made in Nigeria? Every money we make in this country is spent on importation. Until we change this our attitude of importation, we will remain poor.

“Many of the nation’s manufacturers in the past are now out of business because of our culture of importation. We must do something about importation.

“Government must provide a bailout to the people. Government must provide infrastructure and the enabling environment to drive industry. But most important of all is power.”
