Niger Delta rulers meet FG, list conditions for peace in Niger Delta (photos)

The federal government met with traditional rulers and stakeholders from the Niger Delta on Thursday, August 25. The meeting follows the ceasefire announced by the Niger Delta Avengers and other militant groups in the region on August 21.

The Niger Delta monarchs listed out the Six things, federal government will do in order to build confidence, stop the destruction of the country’s oil assets by militants in the region and restore peace in the region.

The Bolowei of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Chief Wellington Okirika, listed the six things at the headquarters of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in Abuja.

The six conditions listed are;
1. As a matter of urgency the Federal Government should appoint/constitute a Federal Government dialogue team.

2. Release the 10 innocent school children arrested by the Nigerian Army on the 28th of May, 2016 in Oporoza and others in detention on trumped up charges.

3. Return the Golden Sword, being the symbol of authority in the Gbaramatu traditional institution

4. Return the three traditional council speed boats in custody of the Nigerian Army;

5. Cessation of hostilities perpetrated by the military in the Niger Delta region

6. The Federal Government should make a categorical statement about the opening of the Maritime University, Okerenkoko Delta State for academic activities in the 2016/2017 session.

Addressing the Niger Delta rulers, Ibe Kachikwu, the Minister of State for Petroleum, said the visit provided an opportunity for them to come together and proffer sustainable solutions to Niger Delta challenges.

He said: “We will continue to work together as partners in progress, every step of the way until the Niger Delta Challenges are surmounted,”
